Usenet @ UIUC
An organization dedicated to preserving Usenet at UIUC
Next Meeting: Monday, Sep 30, 6pm, The Office (downtown Urbana)
Usenet @ UIUC is an organization dedicitating to preserving Usenet on the UIUC campus. Our server, news.ks.uiuc.edu, came up on October 25th, two days before the old campus news server was retired.
Details and sub-projects
- We run a news server. It
can be accessed over the web, either publicly (restricted
group access or login required) or internally.
- Hierarchies:
- uiuc.* - we currently keep the uiuc.* hierarchy alive for
local, campus use, and are doing so. Access is restricted to
on-campus machines and UIUC users that have set up accounts.
- uiuc.org.* - we have a booth at Quad Day (Aug 24), and will be handing out flyers to those RSOs that are attending the event, to see if they would be interested in setting up newsgroups.
- cmi.* - we currently have a cmi.* feed from Prairienet. We can therefore communicate with the community effectively.
- illini.* - some work has already begun to create a semi-public Usenet hierarchy for UIUC students, faculty, staff, and alumni. This project is not run by Usenet @ UIUC, but we will be associated with it.
- Major hierarchies - we currently offer full feeds of the Big-8 (rec, soc, sci, talk, news, misc, comp, and humanities), bionet.*, chi.*, linux.*, and gnu.*. We also offer alt.* and free.* groups by request, though we do not carry binaries.
- net.*, or Usenet II - we should be able to peer this hierarchy at some point. Details to come.
- uiuc.* - we currently keep the uiuc.* hierarchy alive for
local, campus use, and are doing so. Access is restricted to
on-campus machines and UIUC users that have set up accounts.
- Other campus news servers - rather than just rest on a single news server, we plan to help other departments set up custom news servers to localize support and allow for local customizations.
- News server specifics - we are running INN on a donated Pentium
IV system running Linux. Donations of hard drive space, memory,
and system administration time would be appreciated.
- While the space to run the server has been generously offered in the short term by the Theoretical and Computational Biophysics Group, we hope to find a more long-term home for the system. We are currently intending to move the server to the campus ACM space, but no concrete plans have been set.
