Hook, Line, and Sinker: November, 1996

Former US Press Secretary and noted US Journalist Pierre Salinger won this award for his role in passing along the "TWA Flight 800 Downed by US Navy" theory from Usenet to the US News Media. When the media got a hold of the story, they ran with it and it was immediately in the national headlines; from a half-baked Usenet rumor, the entire world was trolled.

Although Salinger did not personally start the rumor, he still passed it on and trolled more people than virtually any other person in Usenet's history. Considering the press coverage of the theory, Salinger was assured of victory as soon as he was nominated.
