SkirvFAQ: Trimming Quotes
Why don't you quote my entire article?
Proper netiquette when responding to an article or email is to quote only that material which is directly relevant. Even then, the *most* proper is to fully summarize the others' material - "mail me, and I'll summarize and respond". (I've done that a few times, but it's a lot of work.)
Oh, and I consider quoting my material back to me under the text that you write (bottom-posting) to be *very* rude. Please don't do it. Top-posting isn't much better; please cut most of what I've written, too.
Why do you trim others' quotes so heavily?
I assume that anybody can track down the full messages that I'm responding to if they need them. This is especially true on Usenet, where the References: line contains a direct reference back to it. Please take my actions as a sign of respect; I want to present your words as part of an easy-to-read and simple message of my own, and not have them endlessly copied until their context is lost.
