Skirv's LiveJournal
My first LiveJournal entry was on July 3rd 2002, after the Daemons had finally let it slip that they had had a journal for a few months beforehand. I'm still not clear on where they got it (Jason claimed credit, but someone paid for their account for a while and he did *not* do that); all I know for sure is that they were using it for a few months, and seemed to be getting some value out of it. So as part of their punishment I forced them to hand over a LJ code so I could try the thing out too...
I'm not sure what more history there has been on the thing than what I just gave. I have pretty much set down a fair number of rules of the LJ:
- Don't talk about work, except perhaps obliquely.
- I am writing for myself, overall. Writing for others is a secondary benefit.
- Know who's reading. Remember the politics!
- This is unencrypted. So anybody could be reading.
- Try to avoid bringing the politics to others' LJs unless they want them.
- Don't write just because you want to write. If you do, just put it on 'private'.
I'm sure there's more I can't think of at the moment...
I've also spent some effort here and there trying to port LJ to NNTP, mostly so I could have access to real killfiles on LJ. It doesn't look like it's going to work. I am still writing some archiving scripts when I have a few seconds to work on it (which is rarely), and will probably do a lot more stupid little software projects here and there for the next few years. And for now, I'll keep using it just because.
