'Morning. I'm Tim Skirvin, seventeen-year-old Illinois resident, UIUC undergrad, and owner of this homepage. Here's a rundown of who I am. Education: I'm a freshman at the University of Illinois Urbana- Champaign, majoring in Computer Engineering; come two weeks from now, I'll be living in Allen Hall (change your address books, folks). For high school, I graduated from University High, a semi-private school (as in "the worst legal aspects of public and private schools"), and got a *very* good education out of the deal.

Interests: many. Politics is the most important, probably; I'm a libertarian, believing in freedom of choice, informed consent, the ability to say just about anything, less government, and the legalization of virtually anything you can name. I'm a computer person, great at PCs and pretty good at Unix and Macintosh systems; I like role-playing games and reading, too. And then there's Usenet.

Usenet: I'm a regular. I frequent news.admin.net-abuse.misc, alt.censorship, comp.org.eff.talk, alt.religion.scientology, and a few local hierarchies; I lurk, and occasionally post, on a few hundred other groups. Look for the rants against the local loon, and you'll probably find me.

Job: PC consulting, tech support, public relations, and general grunt work for SponsorNet. I signed a non-disclosure form, so I can't say too much about it. If you really want a resume, though, you're going to have to get it elsewhere.

Personal Stuff: yeah, right, I can list it all in one web page. For a quick summary, try here for a whole pile of interesting (but useless) information about myself.

Goals: survive. College will be a challege; I'll see what happens there. I'll grab a degree or two, then wander off into the real world; then I get to really work, hopefully doing something either computer or politics related. Then comes the mid-life crisis. You can figure out the rest better than I can; I'm seventeen. I'm not supposed to plan everything out that long, right?
In the mean time, I'll just go for the short-term goals: write stories, win arguments and debates, play video games, make my computer work, learn useless information, help people out that might need it, that kind of stuff. Real people stuff. I'm not completely abnormal...

Notes of the week (look for these to change when I get bored):
My responsibility has ended; may unihigh.* prosper alone.

Links: well, I'm not much for 'em, myself. I've got a few, though.

  • SponsorNet
These folks pay web-page makers for their troubles by doing some passive advertising stuff. It's legit. I'd do it myself, if I got the hits, and/or I used pictures. Bear with 'em, they're good folks... (besides, I work for 'em.)
  • Scientology vs. the Net
Scietologists are trying to stop the truth, basically, and they're doing it by being generally evil. Read all about it.
  • The Electronic Frontier Foundation
This organization was founded to help defend the 'net in general. I'm a member.
  • Uni High's Class of '95
I graduated with 'em, I volunteered to keep track of 'em, here they are.
  • Stories I've written
Yeah, I write stuff, too. Some people appreciate it.
  • The Killfile Daemons' Homepage
    Trust me on this one.

Warnings: I'm really, _really_ stubborn. I'm intolerant of stupidity. I'm an atheist/agnostic. I'm touchy about censorship. I don't like chocolate. If people won't leave me alone, I get cranky. I'm usually broke. I don't hesitate to argue with people if they're wrong. Flame me publicly and I'll flame back. Don't call me a statist unless you really mean it. I'm a picky eater -- no vegetables, thanks. I'm not always clear in what I'm writing, or saying for that matter. If you must attack me, do it with stuff I really did. I don't lie. I don't drink, smoke, or use any drug more powerful than caffeine. I don't like thank-you notes, me-too posts, or anything that has no content. I notice lots of things that I shouldn't know. I love to interrupt conversations. Most of my comments are in-jokes of some sort or another. Trying to convert me to a different religion has been known to cause violence. I often know what I'm talking about. I rarely, if ever, curse. I don't like it if people won't respond to me. Finally, and most important, I _don't_use_smileys_.

Other comments: just one, just as it has been for a while. I'm a real person. I really am. I'm an _odd_ real person, sure, I've got a distinctive personality, but I do exist. If you realize that, you'll figure me out sooner than if you think I'm a pile of electrons a many miles away. I'm friendly, relatively forgiving, and willing to help people in need, but don't offend me. I fight back, thank you very much, and you'd probably rather just have me help you, right?

Disclaimers: Any and all opinions that I express are either mine or no one's, unless I say otherwise specifically; the UofI would probably disown me if they knew 'em all, and my employers...well, the less said the better, eh? Spelling errors are probably my fault, but then again, it might be a good idea to look them over. Contact me if you want to add anything I've done or am in charge of to big ol' page things, if you want to enshrine my writings somewhere that I didn't put 'em in the first place, if you want to repost stuff, or, basically, if you want to do anything but read 'em (within reasonable limits, of course). And, when in doubt, assume "Copyright 1995, Tim Skirvin".
(Next question: was that actually legally binding? *snicker*)

I guess that'll do it. If you have questions, comments, or whatever, I really do exist, I really do read mail, and I really do respond to talk requests (well...I exist most of the time, I read mail when I get the chance, and I respond to *most* talk requests. Better?).
If you're really lazy...oh, why not. Send in those comments, folks; this oughta do it...

In most cases, if you want to talk to me, mail me first. Thanks.
