Once again, I was able to attend my Dad's apple taste-testing lab on
the south side of campus this year. It again took place in Mumford Hall,
and was attended by a few hundred students; there were 35 or so varieties
of apple out this year (a new record!), and as always everybody had an
excellent time.
Some background: this was the fourth of these Labs I've taken
pictures of (2004,
2003, 2002); but there have
been many more than that. The idea behind it is to show students two
things: a) there are many varieties of apple in the world, and b) some are
(much) better than others. It always seems to do a good job of it...

Start of Class I got in just at the bell, so I only had time for one shot of the class. At least I knew the front row. (Diane, John, Danielle)

Dr. Skirvin In Professor Mode.
Richard Hands Out Quizes Of course, the quiz is just answering the survey of "how did you like these apples?"
Showing Apples In his left hand is an old Red Delicious variety. In his right is a Washington Red. Neither tastes great; the left hand's is better, though.

Heading Out to Taste Hordes of students amuse me.
New Signs "Try a slice of each apple cultivar, but Don't take the apples - we need them for the students to evaluate!" Essentially, this is usedto keep the random passers-by in the building fed without causing undue trouble.
Taking Notes It shouldn't amuse me to see studious students, but, well, it does...
Well-Chopped Apples Now *that's* how you slice an apple! (Not I; I can't do anything that impressive.)

Grandma She specifically came to C-U at this time of year to see the lab.
Melrose A quite tasty variety of apple. This girl seemed contemplative of it...
Richard Dr. Richard would be a better caption, I guess. He's the most recent graduate of my Dad's lab. I like the guy a lot.
Mid-Taste It's hard to get a shot with an open mouth, for some reason.

More Richard Cutting I always like how the students are afraid we'll cut ourselves. Or them.
Leaning to Cut Okay, fine, so it doesn't look like that much of a stretch. But I haven't hurt myself there yet!
Erik My assistant, enjoying a couple of hours off.
Hail Mary Not a bad shot from above, really.

Dad Chopping Dad definitely gets his hands dirty too.
Betsy One of the students from my lab, that has made it a point of coming every year for a while now.
Several Cultivars On an empty table, at that. Rare.
Danielle Takes Notes I like it when the wall is an available surface.

Pink and Apples There's a lot of pastels in this shot.
Posing with the Apple This led to a wonderful comment on the quiz: "This was the greatest day of my life. Mini Skirvin took a picture of me! We need to do this instead of quizzes more often."
David Takes Some Shots It makes me happy that I can have some basic photography conversations with him nowadays.
Diane She used to work in my Dad's lab.

Mom It's always nice to see her working along side us.
Finishing Up The last few apples went to the workers, and the random folks around.
Descriptive Sign "SKIRVIN'S HORT 100 APPLE CULTIVAR EVALUATION LAB". Doesn't that sound more classy than "Apple Lab"?
