Grape Stomp '05 - 14 Sep 2005

This was year was the third where I attended the UIUC Horticulture Club's annual Grape Stomp, where undergrads stomp on grapes just like was done back in the old days to make wine. (Well, not just the old days.) There was also a grape juicer, which gave us regular old juice, which made me a bit sick from its sheer sweetness...

Last year's pictures are here. And before you ask, no, I didn't stomp this year...

Images
Dad, Setting Up
This is one of the events that Dad likes the most in the year.
Pulling out the Grapes
Rolling them out, really. There were a lot!
The Juicer
It's not as impressive as last year's, but it's not bad either.
Some Grapes
These grapes were picked out at the University farms over the last few weeks.
Some More Grapes
I actually helped out with some of it... though I spent more time with the apples.
Assembling the Juicer
Gotta get things ready to start shortly...
Lines of Students
With a couple of professors tossed in, admittedly.
Preparing to Start
Just going over a few last minute details.
Early Lecture
Explaining the history of grapes, wine, and grape stomping in a couple of minutes.
Pool and Grapes
This is what the students all stomped in.
Taking Off Shoes
The goal is not to get mud all over the grapes. Not that we're going to drink them anyway.
First Stomping
Dad was, of course, the first to start.
Kids in a Pool
I think the most you can reasonably fit in is four. Of course, not everyone is reasonable.
Lines for the Pools
This is a popular event, as you can probably tell.
Post-Stomping
Well, post round-one anyway. There was plenty to go!
Lots of Pools
Or at least lots of people in the pools, three pools isn't really that many.
Getting In
As far as I know, nobody slipped this year.
Juice Close-Up
All over her feet. Mmm...
End Result
This is what happens after a while of stomping. Mmm, again!
Art
I was promised the chance to go on the roof, and I missed it. Nuts!
Pouring Juice
Back over in the other side, juice was being created for drinking.
Stuffing the Grapes
Each set of grapes can survive two runs through the juicer...
Really Stuffing Them
...three if you *really* try.
Juice Output
You can see the drips here at the bottom of the machine; this appeals to me.
Pouring More Juice
Dad had been put in charge of this part of the stomping by this point.
Inside of the Juicing Bag
It's just not as appetizing any more, is it?
Stomping and Juice
Two great things, together at last!
Refilling the Pools
The refilled grapes were colder, since they'd been frozen. *shiver*
Flat Grapes
Today's Physics Lesson: when you squish grapes, they get flat.
Pouring Grapes
The best shots from last year were like this...
Pouring Grapes, II
...so I got quite a few shots of it again this year.
Running the Juicer
I should play with the machine next year.
Juice Output
That's real juice there! The good stuff! The S-U-G!
Re-Stuffing the Grapes
Another round two of the squishing.
More Grape Pouring
I do like the obvious action in these shots.
Holy Juice Grail
This somehow seemed appropriate for the juice.
Dad's Goblet
Certainly, Dad took to it quickly.
Grape Stomp Sign
I've learned in recent years to get shots like this, to help me later on.
Drinking Juice
Dad was excited to get a pitcher.
Posing with the Class
It's always great to see how much Dad and his students enjoy each other.
Need More Containers
This Gatorade container will hold it!
Still Stomping
The numbers are down, but the stomping continues.
Posing Stompers Postng Stomper-Feet
Cleaning Up Juicing Bag Grape Droppings Dad Loses an Arm
NOO! Not my Dad's arm!
Grizzled Dad
Okay, so it doesn't look like blood at all.
One Final Juice
The color is more uniform this time.
One Final Juice, II
Of course, that means it doesn't taste quite as good...
One Final Juice, III
...but the color is nifty.
