On 26 Mar 2002, after a freak heavy snowfall, my research group left work and made a 14'
tall snow spire. Why? I don't think any of us were very clear on that.
It was really fun, though... And it stayed up for nearly a week. Even
now, you can see a dead patch of grass where the weight of the thing
killed it...
The official work site for this effort is here. Some
cleaner shots (taken with a better camera and by a better photographer
than I was at the time) are here.

Starting Off By the time I got down there with a camera, we were already many feet into the process.
|
Continuing progress Melih and Barry, as some of the tallest, started things off; that's Paul in the background helping to gather the snow.
|
Scaffolding in Earnest Around here we realized that minimal scaffolding just wasn't going to cut it.

Building Up Whee!

Final Packing Gotta make sure it all stays up now.

Scale It's good to show scale every now and then.

Spire and Ring The scaffolding went into creating the ring.

Snowball Fight Okay, so just building wasn't enough. Sometimes you have to destroy too, even if just a little bit.
|
Snowball Fight, II I won't say whether I stayed behind the camera to avoid being hit.
