Marilyn's Retirement Party, 17 Dec 2004

Marilyn Lynch, the TCB Group secretary for as long as there has been a TCB Group, is due to retire at the end of 2004. In commemoration of this, we threw a retirement/holiday party for her at Klaus' house on the 17th of December. We self-catered it, in the interest of having better food and service (at the cost of more work); this worked out remarkably well. My contribution: a rather large bowl of fruit salad...

Other highlights of the evening: a song-and-dance number about the joys of being an international graduate student; a song sung by Marilyn's grand-daughter and her boyfriend; a pair of photo-mosaics; a DVD of personal testimonials about how much we'll miss her; and, of course, the classic "for she's a jolly good fellow". It was a good time. And at least she's here for another couple of days...

Fruit Salad
This is how much fruit salad I made for the party.
Fruit Salad and Scale
Rosemary always makes a good size scale.
Fruit Salad, Close-Up
Ingredients: apples (three varieties), Pineapple, Kiwi Fruit, Grapes, Star Fruit, Bananas, Mandarin Oranges, Frozen Blueberry/Raspberry/Blackberry Mix, Passionfruit Juice, Orange Juice, Craisins
Fruit Salad, With Bananas
Yeah, I forgot to put them in last shot, silly me.
Fruit Salad and Hand
It was sticky. Oh, and for the record, I was *not* bathed in this container as a child.
Cakes
Not my bailiwick.
Kirby's Tie
Yessir, it was red!
Early Drinks
Rob and Brijeet were in charge of the booze.
Fixing the Coffee Maker
It managed to break on the way from the office, so Tim Isgro and Dan Wright fixed it.
Platypus Door Knocker
A fixture on Klaus' house, I figured it needed a shot.
Yi and the Salad
She was going to get the first serving...
Hungry Eric
...and then Eric ate it all. Oh well.
Christmas Carols
Dave, as our Official Musician, always gets put on piano duty.
Early Mingling
Not too many guests yet, but at least Alek and Taras were already working.
Tik
The first person to actually start taking food.
The Guest of Honor
Marilyn arrived a bit late, after having had dinner with Klaus.
Peter and Sarah
It's nice to find out your workers are married, eh?
Paul
Here's an unexpected guest! Back from California, just to visit Marilyn...
Mingling in Earnest
Everybody's divided up into their groups.
Marilyn
She looks really happy to be there, don't you think?
Supervillain Tim
He just needs a mask.
Fatemeh and Emad
The Persian contingent, living it up.
Klaus
Paul wanted me to get a close-up of Klaus' face, for an "unofficial group member" page he has back home.
Klaus, II
The first shot was better, but both were interesting.
More Drinks
Brijeet and Rob continue to do their job well.
No Candid Shots
Somebody was tipping everyone off. Hmmph.
Back to Candid
Okay, so I wasn't thwarted for long.
Marilyn's Throne
Setting up to do the presentations.
Starting the Speeches
Klaus starts things off with a fairly short speech.
Marilyn-Watching
Most of the people here are Marilyn's family; in front is Katie, our office assistant, and laughing in the back is Jo, our other secretary-type.
Marilyn-Watching, II
Klaus is giving a good speech, as evidenced by the smiles on everyone's faces.
Klaus' Speech Continues
The worry on his face is legit. He's gonna miss her most of all of us.
Singing Grand-Daughter
Marilyn's Grand-Daughter had a song about to sing about Marilyn, with her boyfriend on guitar. It was sweet.
Listening to the Song
Marilyn's Family listens on.
Photo-Mosaic of Klaus
Our gift to Marilyn: a photo-mosaic of her beloved boss!
Klaus' Mosaic
It's made up of smaller pictures, mostly taken in Marilyn's office by me or my predecessors.
Marilyn's Response
It's not quite horror... *grin*
Marilyn's Mosaic
Luckily, a photo-mosaic was also made of her. And this one was framed!
Dualling Mosaics
Showing them off together.
Presenting to Marilyn
She likes it! Hooray!
Kirby's DVD
Kirby presents the DVD of video testimonials to Marilyn here. No, I don't have a copy of it... though I am in it.
Official Group Present
It's a box! I wonder if it has anything in it?
Official Group Present, II
Yup: Chocolate! (And in that was gift certificates for Bed, Bath & Beyond).
Great Grand-Daughter
I don't know her name, but she was cute. And photogenic.
Rehearsal
Getting ready for the song-and-dance number from the Physical Revue.
Laughing with Family
I think they just got copies of the skit's script.
Marilyn and Klaus
Aah, the symbolic leaning on Marilyn.
Watching the Skit
It's not often you see Klaus sitting on the floor.
The Skit Begins
Barry and Rosemary sing!
Rosemary the Cabaret Singer
I should have guessed there was a purpose for that dress.
Laughing at the Skit
Genuine amusement is fun to get on film. Or CompactFlash cards. Whatever.
More Skit Folk
You thought it was just Rosemary and Barry?
Flag Hats
Each of these hats had a different flag on it. I think that at some point they were even matched to the appropriate ethnicities...
Flag Hats, II
...but, given Jim's hat, that time wasn't tonight.
Uncle Sam
FOUR MORE YEARS! No, wait, scratch that... FOUR LESS!
Evil Rosemary
Looking scary for the encore!
Tyler and Tim
One scary hearts-playing duo.
Marilyn Mosaic
A final shot of the mosaics seemed in order.
Klaus Mosaic
This way, you can zoom in and see shots of me from years ago!
One Final, Eternal Talk
Klaus' Mosaic can talk with Marilyn's Mosaic for eternity. Aww...
