Seattle Zoo, 11 Jul 2004

As part of our Seattle trip, Beth and I met Danny to go to the Woodland Park Zoo, where he was working for the summer. As I tend to when I go to the Zoo, I took a lot of pictures... As for Danny, this was the first time he actually got to wander the zoo as a tourist. So it was good for everyone!

Images
Zoo Doo
*insert Beavis laugh*
Danny the Scientist
Look! He's drawing blood! It must be legit!
Elephants
Our first animals of the trip
Tapir
Is it odd that I think it's a cute animal?
Macaque Monkey
Apparently they're mean. *shrug* Stuff you learn when your brother's working in a zoo.
Chimpanzee
I think it's a Chimp. The map doesn't bear this out, though.
Orangutan
Yay for the cool ape family creatures!
Orangutan, II
They have good picture possibilities here...
Orangutan, III
From above. Note the map. (That'd sure come in handy about now...)
Orangutan, IV
Aah, laziness.
Birds of Prey
I can't identify anything but the owl in the middle, sadly.
Bald Eagle
Always good to have one of them around, I guess...
Raptor Guy
It does have to be kinda cool to just hang around carrying an owl. Or hawk. Or any of these guys.
Tree Fox
Or at least that's what I think it is. It is cute, anyway.
Komodo Dragon
I love these guys!
Komodo Dragon, II
So cute, cuddly, deadly, and mean!
Tiger
Yay, giant cats!
Sloth Bears
I'm afraid this is the best picture I got of the bears my brother spent so much time looking after... There's a mother and two kids there! Really!
Danny the Butterfly
He has a wonderful worried expression on his face. *giggle*
Caterpillar Heads
We had some guy take this shot for us; he took three shots without realizing it. I love my camera.
Julia Butterflies
An ironic place to start...
Queen Butterfly
I do have a guidebook, if you hadn't guessed.
Zebra Longwing, in Flight
Danny could probably do this from just seeing them...
Spicebush Swallowtail
...and in fact has tried several times already.
E. Tiger Swallowtail
But as for me, it's pretty easy to just follow the guide.
Buckeye
Well, most of the time; I can't identify them at a long distance on rocks easily.
E. Black Swallowtail
The harder stuff is remembering that this is the one that Danny used to play with (or was it the Zebra?)
E. Black Swallowtail, II
It was the Zebra, my bad.
Monarch Butterfly
I was capable of identifying this on my own, at least.
Zebra Swallowtail
And this one. Whee!
Zebra Longwing, II
Oh no! Repeats!
Zebra Longwing, III
Whatever shall we do...
Queen, II
I know, we'll finish up!
Grand Finale
More butterflies than I care to identify!
Making a Donation
Beth liked the butterfly house more than my camera liked the light.
Lizard House
Unlike with the butterflies, I didnt' get a book listing the lizards. This will be a problem.
Python(?)
I think it's a python. It's cute!
Another Snake
*sigh* I want labels.
Excited Lizard
I didn't tap it! I just took pictures!
More Snakes
Even when I was writing about rocks I was better than this.
Another Snake
I think this might have been a rattlesnake! Maybe.
A Lizard
I think I was running out of space on my first memory card here, so I was trying to get it used up and go onto the next one...
Poison Dart Frogs
You really have to be impressed with the colors. Really.
Shiny Snake
I should *know* this one! It's poisonous, and African, right?
Yellow Snake
I forgive myself for not knowing this one, though.
Green Snake
Probably a Green Python.
Lurking Alligator
The poor lighting actually helps this picture.
Little Alligator
I was told that this guy was biting the turtles lately. This didn't really hurt them, but it annoyed them. Bad alligator!
Chalmeleon
These are the coolest creatures on earth.
Chameleon, II
Van-der-Waals forces, weak molecular forces hold them on the wall! How cool is that?
Shedding Lizard
This guy's cool looking too.
Bunch O'Snakes
I like snake nesting instincts.
Somehow, his hair color is an interesting contrast here...
Danny and Lizards
Somehow, his hair color is an interesting contrast here...Danny and Lizards
Boa Constrictor
Another one that can be identified from memory. *fwew!*
Emu
I find it strange to see these things in cagets. I've seen too many of them wandering in zoos on their own... They're like peacocks that way.
Wallaby
Of course, what I really wanted was a wombat.
Kookaburra
Is that a gum tree? Dunno.
Tree Kangaroo
I think that's it, anyway. It's a marsupial, at least.
Tree Kangaroo, II
And it's tired!
Tree Frogs
Aah, the rain forest section, where the pictures are always through wet glass!
Tree Frogs, II
And the animals make good beanie babies.
Tropical Monkey
I don't know what it was, and the reflection is bad, but it's still not a horrible shot.
Toucan
It is sad that the toucan's image has to be wasted on a very icky breakfast cereal.
CITES
Well, the other CITES.
More Toucan
An interesting beak-on view.
Another Bird
Black with a yellow bill means something to somebody, I'm sure!
Monkey Island
I have no way of textually representing the joy that was the Monkey Island series of games except to shout "GROG!"
One Last Monkey
Front view.
One Last Monkey, II
Back view; I wish I could identify it from either side...
Zebra and Antelope
The plains of Africa. I guess.
Monkey in Tree
It's too far away to identify the species, but it's still a cool shot.
Lioness
Sleeping in the background. Danny had spotted another one, and we spent a lot of time trying to convince each other we were looking in the wrong place...
Giraffe
Oddly, the other orientation's shots weren't as good.
Hippopotamus, I
We were far enough away to make it take effort to get a proper picture of this guy...
Hippopotamus, II
But given that it was the last animal of the day, I wasn't getting away without one.
Squirrel
Well, last animal except for this one.
Hippopotamus, III
Hippos hold a special place in my heart anyway...don't ask why.
Beth and Danny
Too much light.
Tim and Beth
Too much shadow.
