How to explain... Tim Pierce was the original person to say "No." He's famous enough (on Usenet) to be mentioned in the Geek Code for it. Well, after posting enough "No."s of my own, he eventually accepted that I had taken over his role. Good enough, right? Well, when I was doing this before I used to sign my posts as 'Tim "Pierce" Skirvin'. To see someone doing that to me...

Most of the networked "sub-boards" (newsgroups) were related to science fiction, role-playing games, C programming, and WWIV sysop discussions. One user of my system was Tim Skirvin, who was made co-sysop because of his frequent contributions to many "subs", and later became a well-known Usenet personality.

  Now that is a post and a response I'd like to see! Tim has had

To call Tim Skirvin a "boy genius" is inaccurate because he is no longer a boy. (Although he looks like one on his home page.) I am reluctant to call Tim a "genius" because the word is inadequate in his case. Combine technical skill, political savvy, a social conscience, and a heart as big as Texas, and you might come close to understanding Tim Skirvin. Tim is the Doogie Houser of the Internet. A man who has poured so much of himself into the net that it will forever bear the stamp of his brilliance. Tim does the work of 10 men in Cyberspace, and those of us who benefit from his labor will never be able to thank him properly. Tim is a Libertarian who doesn't comb his hair ever, and these facts really irritate me more than they should. He makes up for these queer personal traits by being rather thoughtful and somewhat inclined to raise a ruckus. Sort of a young Michael Moore. Tim's like a Godfather of Allen Hall's Ground South floor. You can tell a lot about my friends just by looking at their Godfather. Peel the cover off this book though, and enjoy his website, eh? It is a rather disturbing insight into a pleasantly disturbing world.

Ah, Tim. Much as I've been amused by his calling me weak willed and foolish, much as I've been annoyed by his occasional lack of responsibility, and much as I've been frustrated by his pigheadedness I'm still going to miss him.
To me, Tim will always be the symbol of LDBNR. And Usenet, but that's incredibly different.
I have a feeling it would be easy to find a lot of info about Tim Skirvin. Try his site, for one. But there are a couple of things that I should say, for the sake of propriety.
Tim is computer guru who knows more than he thinks, loves more than he likes, and eats more than he sleeps. He's a man of passions, very devoted to his own code of conduct. Even the clipping his nails on Wednesdays part.
I don't know how to explain him, and I never will.

It's hard to remember precisely how I officially met Tim. I think it was through Caitte, but that point is rather irrelevant. I knew who Tim was and I wanted to meet him, so I tentatively started greeting him by name in the spring of 1999 and he (eventually) responded in kind. He is a winter 1999 graduate of the University of Illinois in Computer Engineering, which makes him all the cooler to me. He now works for the university doing something computer-related and hasn't compromised a single aspect of the person he is, other than slightly revising his sleeping schedule to get up earlier in the day. He still has an obsession with drawing <FISH><on every available surface, including my hand, and wears an lanyard around his neck with his current buttons of choice. And if that wasn't cool enough, he has one of the best web pages I have ever seen!
